History Repeating

Herodotus is known as the Father of History. He got this moniker because he meticulously wrote down the details of the Greco-Persian Wars, which is more commonly known as "The Histories." Herodotus was really the first person to write down the details of these wars and systemically analyze what hat happened in the past. He gathered as much information as he possibly could on events that had happened, some major, some seemingly mundane, and strived to record the facts as objectively as he could. Herodotus recognized that if we analyzed the past that we could learn from it and not repeat mistakes and atrocities that had happened.

Sadly, it seems, since we live in a world full of fallen people, we continue to make the same mistakes time and time again. With the current atrocities and humanitarian crimes being made against innocent souls in Europe right now, my heart is heavy. (For all countries involved.) What can I do? How do I help? I feel like there is nothing I can do to stop anything or make anything better, but there is. In the Bible Paul tells us what to do in times like these in 1 Timothy 2:1-4.

"I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth."

Pray for the men and women in positions of earthly authority. Paul is making a direct connection between praying for our rulers and living peaceful and quiet lives. Am I praying good, specific, significant prayers for these people at war? Am I praying for God to soften the hearts of leaders I disagree with?

I also take comfort in knowing I have a God who is in control of all things. A God who is higher and more powerful than all earthly kings, presidents, prime ministers, dictators, etc. I'm trying to hold 2 Chronicles 20:6 in my mind.

"Lord, the God of our ancestors, are you not the God who is in heaven? You rule over all the kingdoms of the nations. Power and might are in your hand, and no one can withstand you."

At the end of the day I remind that this whole situation is just forcing me to burn scriptures into my mind. Scriptures that I can fall back on when I'm struggling. I'm starting to see God using this pattern in my life. He brings me struggles and worries so I'm forced to turn back to Him. For this I am thankful. I shall leave you with one of my favorites, Joshua 1:9.

"Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go."
